We flew from Queensland to Perth on Christmas Day to get ready for our cruise departing Fremantle on the 8th of January 2016.Click Here For The Full Cruise Log from the Sun Princess
14th of January First port Singapore @ 0900hrs.
Spent the time ashore visiting the Marina bay Gardens with a walk on the Sky Walk all this via the great Singapore Mass Transit System. Lunch time was a catchup with a local friend in a Chinese Restaurant then a walking tour around town before a drive back to the ship.
16th of January Next port Phuket, Thailand. Taxi into Phuket Town, a walk around the markets in between the busy traffic, found a Thai massage place where we had a one hour Thai massage then lunch next door. Taxi back to the ship for a few sea days before our next port.
19th of January Chennai, India. Now for our first "Tour" that we had booked with Princess Cruises. We were two hours late leaving the ship, not a good start, the tour bus was very "ordinary" with windows so dirty they were difficult to see out of and the air con was a con, air but not very cool, no stops on the tour for lunch, missed the Fort Museum without explanation and back on board the ship at about 4pm for afternoon tea and lunch as we had had nothing since 7am breakfast, not happy with this tour.
21st of January Next port of call Columbo, Sri Lanka. Here we had organised a private tour, not a Princess Tour, this was set up by "Cruise Critics", a group of travellers arranging tours privately. This tour went exceptionally well, 22 of us went by coach (well air conditioned and clean) to the Mount Livinia Hotel for coffee, a spectacular place then onto a Tea Plantation via a very narrow road, having to pass 7 busses coming the other way, a credit to our driver. Lunch stop at a cafe on the way back to the ship, also very nice and really cheap. Back on board by 6pm, a great day out.
23rd of January Maldives, where we have a tour arranged by Princess. We anchored in Male, the capital of Maldives, a short tender ride to Male then a speed boat ride of about half an hour to our snorkelling destination, a resort island called Adaaran Island. Very nice little island, had coffee and went for a snorkel where we saw lots of fish, a white tip reef shark, nudibranch, clams and a large moray eel. All in all a good swim even though not much live coral to see. Had a good walk around the island then back to Male in an even faster speed boat, about 20 minutes back. In Male did a bit of a walk around before a tender ride back to the ship.
27th of January Landed at the Seychelles, Port Victoria. Bus tour around town and out over the hills for some spectacular views. Drove to some spice gardens where we sampled the aroma from leaves picked direct from the spice trees, Cardamine and Cinnamon. Sampled some fruits from the trees such as Sour Sop and Guava. In the gardens also lives some of the Giant Tortoises that live well over 100 years, a real sight!
1st of February Arrived at Richards Bay, South Africa. A bit of a wait for the Immigration process on board, then into the bus for the Wetland Tour at St. Lucia. A one and a half hour drive through some interesting country / suburbs to the wetlands where we boarded a purpose built boat for the tour. The photos tell it all, lots of Hippopotamus and bird life, also saw a couple of Wart Hogs on shore. A very good cruise and on the bus ride back to the ship spotted an Ostrich. Great day out!
4th of February Arrived at Cape Town, South Africa for a three day stop over. Day one, looked around the V & A Waterfront (Victoria and Albert) before hopping on the red double decker bus (Hop on Hop Off) that took us up to the Table Mountain Cable Car, caught the cable car to the top for a really spectacular view, coffee, cake and pizza at a very nice price was had there on top of what is supposed to be the oldest mountain in the world. Day two, an orgainised tour to Hout Bay followed by the "Cape". From there to the Cape Point Light House. Onto Boulders for a view of the African Penguins. Back to the ship then day three we did our own thing walking around the waterfront shops and cafes where we had some sushi and wine for lunch, again at a very reasonable price.
8th of February Arrived at Port Elizabeth, South Africa for a bus trip to the private game reserve called Schotia where we swapped from a coach to an open Land Rover for the game park experience. Our South African guide drove us (8 persons) around the extensive park where we saw up close and personal, Lions, Blesbuck, Impala, Elephants, Zebra, Ostrich, Rhino, Giraffe, Hartebeest, Springbuck, Warthog, Wildebeest, Water Buck, Reed Buck, Nile Crocodile, Nyala and a range of birds etc. On the reserve we also had morning tea and a Brie (BBQ) for lunch, all very nice including some good South African white wine. A very good tour. We left the park in the coach for a drive back towards the harbour for a stop off at SAMREC (South African Marine Research and Eduction Centre) to see the Penguins being fed (Cormorants also were in it for some free fish). Back to the Sun Princess for a rest and steaming next day for Durban.
10th of February Arrived at Durban, South Africa for a tour of the Gwahumbe Private Game Reserve followed by a visit to the Valley of 1000 Hills Zulu Village for some dancing, lunch and an opportunity to buy some souvenirs. After a full day out, back on board for 3 days steaming to Reunion Island.
14th of February Arrived at Reunion Island and departed the Sun Princess for a full day tour to view the spectacular water falls and the mountainous countryside. All very spectacular. The highest peak is at in excess of 3,000 metres. For lunch we stopped off at Chez Alice where we had Creole style food which was fantastic, also it came with rum punch, red wine and exotic fruit juice.
On our way to Fremantle after leaving Mauritius, a 7 day passage. Cyclone Uriah is off the West Coast of Australia causing us to alter course to the South instead of steaming directly to Fremantle. We have encountered 4 metre swells making the ship move around a bit, the sea sickness bags have been deployed around the ship for those that succumb to the sea. No problem for us sailors!
